Professional Teeth Cleaning
It is important to get your teeth cleaned twice a year. People that do are more likely to keep their teeth and will spend less money on their teeth because you catch problems when they are small.
Professional teeth cleaning is known in the dental world as Prophy (Prophylactic Teeth Cleaning), and it’s a critical part of stopping the spread of gingivitis, which is the early spread of gum disease. To better understand the process, please watch the video to the right.
What is Gingivitis?
According to the American Dental Association, the main causes of gingivitis include:
- poor dental care
- smoking or chewing tobacco
- crooked teeth that are hard to keep clean
- medications, including steroids, certain types of anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, some calcium channel blockers and oral contraceptives.
The good thing is that gingivitis is both preventable and reversible, and — in addition to daily brushing and flossing — getting your teeth professionally cleaned is a key factor in stopping it before the condition causes real damage to your teeth and gums.
