Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer is a silent killer. According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, over 45,000 cases of mouth and pharynx cancers are diagnosed in the United States each year, and claims the lives of more than 8,500 people. Believe it or not, that’s 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day!
Despite these sobering statistics, early detection and removal of cancerous tissue significantly increases survival rates, which is only 50% if left untreated.
Dental Perfections takes oral cancer very seriously, and all of our patients receive an oral cancer screening during their exams. In addition, Dr. Cheryl Bresnahan strongly recommends taking preventative measures to reduce your risk of oral cancer, including:
- Stopping the use of smokeless tobacco products such as snuff and chewing tobacco
- Quitting cigarette, cigar or pipe smoking
- Limiting alcohol consumption
- Screening for legions associated with human papilloma virus (HPV)
- Inactive life style
- Diet high in processed foods
